The majority of shops that perform the official NC state inspection are also repair shops and/or dealers. While it may seem like a convenience to perform all of your services at one location, it can often be a costly mistake.

Repair shops and dealers make all of their money by selling repairs. They will often bend (or break) the NC state inspection laws in their favor and force you to agree to repairs that may not even be part of the state inspection process.

 

Having your car inspected at a repair shop or dealer can take significantly longer. Since these shops have many different services they offer, they typically have much longer waits. Often there will only be one NC state certified inspector at a location. The wait at a dealership can often be hours as state inspections are typically a "low priority" for them.
